Hip Sports Injuries & Trauma
Acute and overuse injuries to the hip in athletes and active individuals
The hip is subject to significant forces during sport and physical activity. Sports injuries range from acute traumatic events (hip dislocations, fractures, muscle tears) to chronic overuse conditions (stress fractures, tendinopathies, impingement).
Common sports-related hip conditions include: groin strains (adductor injuries), hip flexor tears, hamstring avulsions, stress fractures of the femoral neck, snapping hip syndrome, and sports hernia (athletic pubalgia). Many of these overlap and can coexist.
Management depends on the specific injury but typically involves accurate diagnosis (often requiring MRI or ultrasound), followed by a structured rehabilitation programme. Some injuries — particularly labral tears, loose bodies, and certain fractures — may require surgical intervention.
